While carpet is a luxurious, comfortable element for any home, it can also be quite the source for static electricity. Low indoor humidity levels, especially during the winter months, can contribute to static charges in your carpets. Moisture in the air is absorbed by carpet fibers, so when the carpet is deprived of moisture, there is a greater chance of electrical charge and static. Not to worry - there are several shockingly simple solutions to reduce carpet static levels.

Common Static Solutions

The most common solution for reducing carpet static is spraying the carpet surface with an anti-static agent, such as diluted fabric softener. Make your own anti-static agent by mixing one part fabric softener to about five parts of warm water and pour the mixture into a spray bottle. Mist your carpet lightly with the mixture, taking care not to overwet the surface. Let the carpet sit undisturbed overnight and then vacuum the carpet the following day after the surface has dried. It's a good idea to vacuum your carpet before treating it with your anti-static agent, so it doesn't add to pre-existing dirt on your carpet.

Another method to reduce carpet static is to place pans of water on your stove to add moisture to your indoor environment. You can also choose to install a humidifier in your home to manage humidity levels. Take care not to add too much moisture to your indoor environment to the point where it is producing condensation on windows, which could lead to mold or mildew growth. For the most simple approach, open a window. Letting in some air can increase your home's humidity level.
