Common Causes of Carpet Discoloration
Have you noticed areas of discoloration or darkening on your Washington DC, Maryland, or Virginia carpet? Carpet discoloration is usually found at the perimeter of the room and along the baseboards or doors and other interior surfaces. Termed "ghosting," this discoloration is usually causes by the accumulation of small particles present in your home's air. These particles are usually from such sources as tobacco smoke, candle smoke, dust, normal house dust, and dust from such projects as construction, sanding, and grinding. These particles are drawn to a leakage path, such as the base of the wall.
Carpet discoloration can also result from poor cleaning practices. Unfortunately, discoloration can usually not be removed by vacuuming or washing, but some professional cleaning practices are sometimes successful in removing carpet discoloration.
Ways to prevent or reduce carpet discoloration include more thorough cleaning using crevice tools, elimination of indoor tobacco smoke and candle smoke, as well as frequent HVAC filter replacement.
