Choosing the Right Carpet Cleaning Equipment for Your Home
Let's face it; no matter how meticulous you are with your carpet care, dirt, dust, and cooking residue is an everyday reality in any household, particularly during the Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia springtime high pollen season. To combat normal carpet wear and tear, homeowners are increasingly turning to buying or renting carpet cleaning equipment to uphold the integrity and beauty of household carpets. Before renting or buying such equipment, it's a good idea to educate yourself on the several types of carpet cleaning equipment available in today's market. Familiarizing yourself with carpet cleaning equipment options will not only help you obtain the right equipment for your space and carpet type, it will also save you money and avoid potential cleaning frustration.
The most common type of portable carpet cleaning equipment is a carpet extractor or "steam cleaner." Carpet extractors are known for their deep cleaning method of emitting a detergent into the carpet and then pulling the detergent and residual dirt out via a high-powered vacuum. Oil-based stains are best removed using a carpet extractor with heaters, as hot water is a better agent for removing such stains. High-traffic carpet areas are best cleaned using a self-contained carpet extractor, which includes a brush that scrubs the carpet after emitting the detergent.
A method less commonly used by homeowners, extraction restoration operates on the same principles as a carpet extractor, but also contains a rinsing agent that flushes out dirt and residue more thoroughly. Extraction restoration is usually best left to professional carpet cleaners, as using such equipment runs the risk of over-wetting the carpet, which could lead to mold and bacteria growth. For a less thorough, yet less risky, carpet clean, homeowners can choose to use a bonnet cleaner, which is a dry carpet cleaning machine equipped with a bonnet, or round floor pad, affixed to a standard floor buffer that uses friction to pull residue from carpet fibers.
When cleaning carpets yourself, use extra care to ensure that carpets dry as quickly and thoroughly as possible. Use fans and dehumidifiers immediately after cleaning your carpets, and make sure you don't over-wet the carpet in the first place. Start with a mild cleaning solution to ensure that carpet coating will not be damaged. And remember that National Floors Direct is always here to answer your carpet questions.
