How to Fix a Squeaky Hardwood Floor

Squeaky Flooring

A squeaky spot on your hardwood floor can be a nuisance when someone in your home is trying to nap - or even sneak to the refrigerator to grab a snack. A hardwood floor squeak can be repaired according to which layer of the floor is squeaking and from which angle - above or below the floor - you can repair the squeak.

A hardwood floor squeak results from two pieces of wood rubbing together. Two pieces of the floor can rub together because the wood floor has pulled away from its subfloor, or because of a gap between the subfloor and joists. If you do not have access to the subflooring, try dusting the cracks between the floorboards with a small amount of talcum powder or apply a small amount of floor oil between the cracks. Applying talcum powder or floor oil can stop the squeaks when two pieces of wood rub together, but will not remedy a squeak caused by a gap between the subfloor and joists.

If you have access to the subflooring, such as if the floor is over a basement or crawl space, have someone walk on the squeaky floor above until you decipher the exact squeaky spot. Then take a thin wood shim coated with carpenter's glue and gently tap the shim into the space between the joist and subfloor to fill the gap above the joist. To repair a squeak while working from above the floor, you must first locate the joists and then drive flooring nails through the floor and into the joist.
