Burn marks from dropped cigarettes or tipped-over candles are unsightly and often grounds for having to replace your carpeting. However, before you roll up your carpet and look to replace it, examine your carpet to make sure it can't be salvaged.

Burn marks that have seared but not fused the carpet fibers together can sometimes be alleviated through abrasion. Use a pad of steel wool or lightweight sandpaper and rub the burn mark with a circular motion, hitting the burn from all possible angles. This separates the seared particles from the unaffected carpet fibers, cutting down on the burn mark. Finish the process by brushing or vacuuming the burned area to remove any ashes or loose singed fiber. You can also try trimming the fibers from the burn area.
