What Type of Floor Coverings Work Best With Radiant Heat Systems in Your Rhode Island Home
Some homeowners are surprised to learn radiant heat systems can be used effectively with nearly any type of floor covering. Typically, exposed surfaces like ceramic tile or concrete work best because of their heat conducting properties, and hardwood floors also are excellent with radiant heat systems. Carpet, vinyl and laminate flooring also produce good results.
Contrary to popular belief, hardwood flooring is an acceptable floor covering option as long as the installer understands the radiant heat system will be covered with hardwood flooring and takes the extra time necessary. Radiant heat systems operate using heated water that flows beneath the floor covering, in this case the hardwood flooring. Wood reacts to water, either absorbing it or expanding, or if in an environment that is too dry, the moisture will be drawn from the wood causing it to shrink or contract.
When installing a radiant heat system under hardwood floors, choose hardwood flooring that has been kiln dried. The kiln drying ensures the moisture content is equal throughout the wood, which should be between 7 percent and 10 percent. Also, make sure the flooring installation only occurs after the hardwood flooring has been allowed to acclimate to the environment for at least 48 hours.
Radiant floor heating can be used throughout the house and provides homeowners the opportunity to control the temperature in each are of the home. A radiant heat system also reduces the amount of dust and noise in the home since it operates without a furnace or blower. Since the heat radiates from the floor and is not pushed around the house via air ducts, this also means less dust blowing around which may lead to allergy issues in some homeowners.
