Removing Common Stains from Your Carpet
How to Remove Stains From Carpet
Tip over a glass of wine on your brand new Berber? Track in mud on your Saxony? Don't fear - just treat the stain quickly and according to its type. Different types of stains must be treated with different treatment solutions and methods. No matter what type of stain you're dealing with, blot the stain instead of using a brush or rubbing the stain to remove it, which will ultimately cause more damage to the carpet.
Removing Oil Based Carpet Stains
Oil-based stains include butter, cooking oil, crayons, grease, and candle wax. As soon as you can, blot the stain with a paper towel. Make a cleaning solution of methylated alcohol and ammonia and repeatedly apply the solution to the stain until it's gone. Rinse with a mild soap and clear water, blot with a paper towel, and then air dry.
Water-based stains are typically easier to remove than oil-based stains.Removing Water Based Carpet Stains
Water-based stains include alcohol, juice, wine, soft drinks, water-based furniture polish, mud, paint, food dyes, and washable ink. To remove water-based stains, make a cleaning solution of 1/4 teaspoon of nonbleach detergent or white vinegar and a few cups of water, or a small amount of dishwashing detergent diluted with water. After applying the solution, rinse the area with a small amount of lukewarm water and then blot the area using a paper towel. Repeat the rinsing and blotting until the carpet is completely free of cleaning solution and allow the carpet to fully dry.
When treating both oil- and water-based stains, make sure the carpet dries quickly and thoroughly. Always consult manufacturer's suggestions when removing stains.
