How to Repair a Snag in Your Home's Berber Carpet
Berber Carpeting Repairs
Berber carpet is known for its thick, luxurious construction that makes it more durable than other carpets. However, Berber carpet is also known to snag more easily than other carpets, especially when its installed in homes with pets. Berber carpet is woven into long lines of loops that are depending on the carpet's other loops. If your Berber carpet has a small snag or pull, it is essential to repair that snag as soon as possible to prevent the snag from spreading. Therefore, never pull on a loose strand, as it will continue to pull until the knit is completely unwoven.
Repairing a Snag in Berber Carpet
If a pet or sharp object has pulled a loop of yard out of your Berber carpet, you can typically repair it with a couple of simple tools - much like repairing a pulled loop of yarn in a sweater. Use a pair of knitting needles, or unwound paper clips, or even small screwdrivers. First, identify where the pulled loop is and where the yarn comes out to form the next loop. Place the tool you're using through the snapped loop of carpet to prevent any further pulling of the loop through the carpet backing. Using your other knitting needle or tool, pull the next loop in the carpet so the snagged loop is pulled back down. Leave the original snagged loop just a bit larger than the other loops, so the newly pulled-out loop is slightly smaller than the originally snagged loop. Repeat the process of weaving the yarn through the backing, each time making the new pulled-out loop a little smaller than the previous one. Eventually the snag will be worked back into the fabric of the carpet. You may also apply a bit of super blue at the base of the re-looped carpet fiber to hold the fiber in place permanently.
