Does Stain Resistant Carpet Really Prevent Stains?

Undoubtedly, you have seen the commercial featuring red wine spilled in the middle of an all-white living room and the looks of horror splashed across the faces of partygoers, while the homeowner is relaxed. Be assured it is either a commercial for a carpet cleaning solution or a stain-resistant carpet. But does stain resistant carpet work?

Carpet is made of a variety of fabrics including silk, wool, nylon, polypropylene and polyester; however, carpet manufacturers use nylon more frequently since it is resilient against abrasion and mildew.

Each carpet manufacturer has its own secret formula for stain resistant sprays and even how it is applied to the carpet. However, the process works primarily in the same manner.

Since nylon is the material used most frequently in carpet manufacturing, we will use that as an example. Either the manufacturer of the nylon will treat the nylon with chemicals prior to shipping it to the carpet mills or the chemical will be applied directly to the carpet after the final stages of manufacture. The stain resistance chemicals, such as Teflon and Tactesse, are applied to the carpet to prevent oil from adhering to the carpet by slowing the absorption. Most stain resistant carpets are resistant to most foods, wines, ink, rust and pet accidents.

Even with this modern technology, it is important to recognize that just because your carpet is stain resistant, this does not mean it will not stain under any circumstances. The chemicals that treat the carpet are intended to slow down the absorption of the liquid and oils left behind by spills and dropped food, but the chemicals cannot stop it completely. If a glass of red wine is left overnight to soak into the carpet fibers, chances are you will have to invest in a new throw rug to cover up the stain. However, prompt cleaning of the spill will likely help you avoid that throw rug.
