The Damage Moisture Can Do to Your Boston Home's Hardwood Floors
Moisture is hardwood flooring's number one enemy. Water and hardwood flooring simply do not mix, and can lead to damaged flooring, expensive repairs, or a need for new flooring. It is extremely important to clean up any spills immediately, as well as clean hardwood with a dry broom and vacuum attachments according to manufacturer's instructions.
Moisture can lead to the development of gaps between hardwood planks. Wood shrinks as it dries out and expands when it gets wet and humid. Therefore, regular expansion and contraction over time can lead to floor gaps. Moisture can also lead to cupped floors, which can be seen along the width of the wood strip when the edges of the planks raise up and center of the board sinks downward. Cupping occurs when there is more water on the bottom side of the wood plank than on the top, which can be resolved with indoor humidity stabilization and professional sanding and refinishing. Extreme moisture can also warp hardwood floors. Warped hardwood floors sag downward and must be immediately remedied.
