Types of Floor Radiant Heating for Your Boston Area Home
Radiant heating systems supply heat directly to the floor or to panels in the wall or ceiling of a home using radiant heat transfer, or the delivery of heat directly from the hot surface to the people and objects in a room. Radiant heating is known for being more efficient that baseboard heating and most forced-air heating systems because no energy is lost through ducts. Radiant heating can also be installed under a number of flooring types, including hardwood, engineered wood, laminate, and ceramic tile.
There are three types of radiant floor heat, which include radiant air floors, electric radiant floors, and hydronic (hot water) radiant floors. Air-heated radiant floors are seldom installed, as they are not cost-effective in residential applications, but can be combined with solar air heating systems. Electric radiant floors consist of electric cables built into the floor and are usually only cost-effective if they include a significant thermal mass, such as a thick concrete floor. Electric radiant floors may also be installed in home additions in which it would be impractical to extend the existing heating system into the addition.
Hydronic radiant floors are the most popular and cost-effective radiant heating systems, as they work by pumping heated water from a boiler through tubing laid underneath the floor. The cost and process of installing a hydronic radiant floor varies by the size of the home and the type of floor covering.
