Yellowing of carpet fiber can be a common occurrence under certain circumstances and in particular home environments. Read on for a few causes that may be behind the discoloration.

Asphalt brought into your home after walking across a driveway or parking lot can lead to carpet yellowing, especially on gray and blue carpet.
Direct sunlight on a carpet can fade certain colors within the carpet fibers. Yellow is typically the strongest dye in carpets, which means it can withstand direct sunlight moreso than other dyes and thus show through.
Chlorine bleach and certain floor finishes tracked onto your carpet can turn it yellow.
Smoking in the house can cause nicotine to settle into your carpet, leading to not only yellowing, but also hard-to-remove odor.
Pet urine is a common culprit behind yellowing carpet.
Butylated Hydroxy Toluene (BHT) is present in some carpet adhesives, backcoatings, and yarn systems as an antioxidant. BHT can sometimes contribute to carpet yellowing, most often in carpets in low air circulation areas, such as basements or closets.

Carpet yellowing must be remedied according to the source of discoloration. Any solution used on the carpet should be used according to directions and first tested on a small space of carpet before being used on the entire carpet.
